Nottinghamshire County Council has reopened the remaining household waste and recycling centres in the county to residents, as near normal operations resume.
In recent weeks the Council has successfully implemented a phased reopening after sites were closed at the end of March following the Government’s announcement of a ‘lockdown’ due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
All HWRCs in Nottinghamshire are now open 8am to 6 pm daily, seven days a week, although some restrictions remain in place. Sites continue to operate on a managed one in, one out basis for vehicles and all visitors must adhere to the 2 metre social distancing.
Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, Councillor Kay Cutts MBE, said: “Last month we began to reopen recycling centres in Nottinghamshire to the public. We are now in a position where we have not only successfully reopened all our recycling centres across the county but extended their opening hours, and from Monday 8 June vans, trailers and pickups will once again be permitted on site.
“Despite the initial reopening rush centres experienced on the first few days, sites continue to run smoothly with waiting times relatively short and traffic impact in most locations negligible. We ask that residents continue to only visit a site when necessary as sites may get busier next week with vans, trailers and pickups visiting, and keep vehicle windows and doors closed whilst queuing.
“I would like to reiterate my thanks to residents for following the new site rules and their patience and understanding during the phased reopening.
“By continuing to recycle and dispose of waste responsibly and only visiting the sites when unable to store waste at home, residents have played their part, and have helped us to deliver this service effectively whilst the sites operate at a reduced capacity.”
The Council is continuing to work closely with its waste contractor, Veolia to monitor and review the current operation, and to look at ways more materials can be accepted at the sites whilst continuing to adhere to strict social distancing.
Councillor Cutts adds: “We were confident in our approach to reopening recycling centres. The safety of visitors and staff on site will continue to be our priority.”
